What is a knee replacement surgery?
Knee replacement, also called knee arthroplasty or total knee replacement, is a surgical procedure to resurface a knee damaged by arthritis. Metal and plastic parts are used to cap the ends of the bones that form the knee joint, along with the kneecap. This surgery may be considered for someone who has severe arthritis or a severe knee injury.
How long does it take to recover from total knee replacement?
Barring any complications, most patients are able to return to most normal activities and walk without the need of assistive devices between three to six weeks after surgery. Overall, it usually takes two to three months to make a complete recovery from a minimally invasive knee replacement.
Things You Can Try at Home to Ease Knee Pain
Lose Weight to Lessen Stress on Your Knees. Extra weight puts pressure on the knees and increases stress on the joint, increasing pain and making it hard to exercise.
Try Low-Impact Exercise for Strength and Mobility.
Use Pain Medications with Care.
The goal of knee replacement surgery is to resurface the parts of the knee joint that have been damaged and to relieve knee pain that cannot be controlled by other treatments.

KNOW YOUR FACTS :
What are the benefits of TKR?
TKR increases mobility, relieves pain and corrects deformity.
When may I benefit from TKR?
If your knee is severely damaged by arthritis or injury, if you find it hard to perform simple daily activities such as walking or climbing stairs, if you feel pained and stiff when you sit or lie down, if you have chronic knee inflammation or swelling that does not improve with rest or medication, if you have knee deformity, or if non surgical treatments such as medications and walking support are no longer working, you may want to consider TKR.
How is TKR done?
TKR is usually conducted under general anaesthesia (where you have no consciousness of the surgery) or regional anaesthesia (where only the lower part of your body is numbed).
A cut is made across the front of your knee, and your kneecap is rotated out of the way so that your knee area is exposed for the surgeon to take out the damaged bones and cartilage, in order to replace them with new implants.
How long does TKR last?
15 years is the average lifespan for 90% of the cases.
What is the recovery timeline like?
With current technology, the average stay in the hospital is 3 to 5 days, and most patients are able to walk without assistance 2 to 4 weeks post-surgery.
Physiotherapy will begin a day or 2 after surgery generally.
It is expected to take 6 weeks or more of rehabilitation before the patient can completely resume his normal activities.
The patient should be able to take up some low-impact activities (such as going on short walks, and bending the knees to 90 degrees slowly) within a couple of weeks.
What are the possible complications from TKR?
The complication rate following knee replacement has been low ever since the procedure has emerged as a mainstream surgery.
According to the American Orthopedic Surgeons (AAOS), serious complications occur in less than 2 percent of cases.
Complications reported include wound infection, stiffness, ongoing or new pain, and nerve damage.
