Malaysia offers both public and private healthcare services. The country has committed substantial resources in its 2023 budget to bolster the healthcare system, promote advancements in medical technology, and implement digital healthcare solutions. Over the coming decade, both the public and private healthcare sectors will prioritize investments in cutting-edge medical technology and state-of-the-art equipment to ensure high-quality care and the modernization of healthcare services. This strategic focus aims to enhance readiness for managing disease outbreaks, elderly care, and addressing non-communicable diseases.
The Malaysian healthcare system operates on a dual-tiered framework, encompassing both public and private sectors. In 2020, Malaysia counted 146 public hospitals and 202 private hospitals. Private healthcare services are typically paid for through out-of-pocket expenses or private insurance, predominantly serving middle to high-income individuals.
In the same year, Malaysia imported over $1.3 billion worth of medical devices, with U.S. companies maintaining a significant market share at over 17%. This presents valuable opportunities for U.S. enterprises, especially in the fields of health monitoring products, dental equipment, medical technology, and private healthcare services. Malaysia has introduced a comprehensive Halal certification process for medical devices to align with Islamic Shariah law. While not obligatory for all manufacturers marketing their products in Malaysia, Halal-certified medical devices are preferred over non-certified alternatives.
Malaysia’s internationally acclaimed private medical institutions and proficient medical staff have solidified its position as a leading destination for medical tourism, primarily catering to international medical travelers. Nevertheless, Malaysia faces formidable competition from neighboring countries such as Singapore and Thailand in luring medical tourists. In 2019, Malaysia received 1.3 million international medical tourists, generating hospital revenue exceeding US$380 million, with more than half of these medical tourists originating from Indonesia.
